![]() ![]() and you’re ready to import data directly from Microsoft® Word, Excel and Google Contacts. ![]() Connect a LabelWriter™ 4XL to your PC or Mac®. And since Apple already quietly transitioned millions of iOS devices to APFS, it’s a good bet that switching millions of Macs to it will go equally smoothly. The most efficient solution for your professional labeling, filing and mailing needs, the LabelWriter™ 4XL saves you time and money at the office. Volumes formatted as APFS can’t offer share points over the network using AFP and must instead use SMB or NFS.Īpart from the problem of APFS-formatted USB flash drives not being readable by older Macs (or Windows computers), most people shouldn’t run into any problems with APFS-everything it changes is under the hood and will just result in a Mac that’s faster, more reliable, and more secure.Apple’s Boot Camp, which lets you run Windows on your Mac, doesn’t support read/write to APFS-formatted Mac volumes. We recommend against using old disk repair and recovery software that hasn’t been updated for High Sierra on an APFS-formatted volume. You’ll have to back up any data on it, format as APFS, and then restore the data. Although the High Sierra installer can convert a volume from HFS+ to APFS during installation, you cannot convert an APFS volume back to HFS+ without first erasing it.However, Macs running High Sierra from APFS-formatted drives work fine with external hard disks still formatted as HFS+. So don’t format external hard disks or USB flash drives as APFS if you might need to use them with older Macs. Macs running OS X 10.11 El Capitan and earlier cannot mount or read volumes formatted as APFS.That’s one gotcha, and although there are others, they get pretty geeky and most won’t affect you: (If you’re not sure what sort of storage your Mac has, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu and click the Storage tab.) However, if your Mac has a hard disk drive or Fusion Drive, it won’t be converted to APFS at this time. You cannot opt out of the conversion, and the installation will take a bit longer. When you install High Sierra on a Mac with an SSD or flash storage, which includes all recent Mac notebooks and many desktop Macs, your drive will be converted to APFS automatically. If you use FileVault to encrypt your drive, APFS will change the underlying encryption mechanism during the upgrade, but everything will look and work just as it always has. Saving files should also be faster.ĪPFS is also more resistant to data loss or file corruption due to application crashes, and it keeps your data more secure with advanced backup and encryption capabilities. But with APFS, calculating folder sizes becomes nearly instantaneous, as does duplicating a file that’s gigabytes in size. For instance, have you ever used File > Get Info to see how much disk space a folder uses? For a folder containing thousands of files, it can take minutes before you see that number. Being a modern file system, it’s vastly faster than HFS+. Although HFS+, now called Mac OS Extended in Disk Utility, has received numerous updates in the last two decades, it wasn’t designed to deal with terabyte-sized drives, solid-state drives based on flash storage, full-disk encryption, or supercomputer-class Macs. Why is Apple making this switch? In 1985, Apple first developed the Hierarchical File System (HFS) for the Mac, later replacing it with HFS+ in 1998. You see all this information in the Finder, but since the file system is a level below the Finder, you won’t have to learn anything new when Apple starts using APFS. But let’s unpack what APFS is, why you should care, and what gotchas you might encounter.Ī file system is a mechanism for storing files on a hard disk or SSD-it keeps track of where on the drive the pieces that make up each file are located, along with metadata about each file, such as its name, size, creation and modification dates, and so on. With any luck, you’ll barely notice the change, just as almost no one did earlier this year when Apple updated millions of iOS devices to APFS with iOS 10.3. A major change in macOS 10.13 High Sierra is the switch to Apple’s new Apple File System, or APFS. ![]()

![]() ![]() By the end of "Sleepless in Seattle," we're hoping the lovers will meet atop the Empire State Building (a steal from "An Affair to Remember"), and the movie is doing everything to keep that from happening short of assigning Donald Trump to tear it down. The plot mechanics, in fact, reminded me of some of those contrived 1940s and 1950s romantic melodramas where events conspired to bring the lovers close but no closer, and then the writers toyed with us bymanufacturing devices to keep them apart. This film, too, keeps its lovers separate most of the time - although there is a fuzzy scene when Ryan stands in the middle of the street and Hanks gawks at her, and bells ring in his libido. And that was fine with me.Įphron's earlier screenplay for " When Harry Met Sally.," starred Ryan and Billy Crystal, and spent a lot of time showing Harry and Sally not meeting. It is about two people who are destined for one another, and that's that. There is no irony, no distance, no angle on the material. Starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, the film follows a journalist (Ryan) who, despite being newly engaged, becomes enamored with a recently widowed architect (Hanks), when the latter's son calls in to a talk radio program requesting a new. Ephron develops this story with all of the heartfelt sincerity of a 1950s tearjerker (indeed, the movie's characters spend a lot of time watching "An Affair to Remember" and using it as their romantic compass). Sleepless in Seattle is a 1993 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Nora Ephron, from a screenplay she wrote with David S. His dad has indeed met a woman, but since she has a laugh that resembles a hyena's mating call, the son doesn't consider her a contender. Meanwhile, in Seattle, we get to know the Hanks character, who is an awfully nice man but very sad, and his son ( Ross Malinger), who hopes his dad will meet the right woman. Something in the man's voice - or maybe something in his soul that is transmitted along with his voice - appeals to Ryan. He thought a change of scenery might help, but apparently it hasn't. Parents need to know that Sleepless in Seattle is an Oscar-nominated 1993 romantic 'dramedy' about a widower whose son calls a relationship-centered talk show to help him find love. The man ( Tom Hanks) is called to the phone and we learn that after his wife died he went into a deep depression before finally packing up his son and moving from Chicago to Seattle. Sleepless in Seattle: Love at first sightWhat’s happening in this Sleepless in Seattle movie clipCoincidentally, Sam and Jonah are at the airport in Seattle. If you still want more Sleepless in Seattle content after reading this story, check out this piece on some of Tom Hanks’ greatest on-screen meltdowns.Driving through the night, Ryan listens to the story. If there is something you think we left off, make sure to add it in the comments below. This is just a small sampling of everything that went into Sleepless in Seattle. After thinking it over, Delia Ephron came up with the idea of having the father and son still at the building but on their way back to the top just as Annie was able to head down. Initially, Sam and Jonah had already exited the Empire State Building by the time Annie had gotten there, but the Ephron sisters just didn’t like the way it played out. And just like she did with the “NY” scene earlier in the movie, the director called on her sister, Delia Ephron to help make the scene work. The final moments of Sleepless in Seattle (Annie finally properly meeting Sam at the top of the Empire State Building) make for an all-time great romantic comedy ending, but Nora Ephron admitted during the commentary that she initially had trouble when working on that section of the script. The Ending At The Empire State Building Originally Looked Much Different So much red, so much love, so much passion shared by the pair as they finally meet and fall in love. Once Annie and Sam’s paths cross at that moment, there’s an abundance of red - the soccer players, Jonah’s coat, and then Annie’s run to the Empire State Building in the film’s final moments. Partly because of me because I hate blue. But we used a very controlled palette in the movie. It’s just one of those little ideas that production designers sometimes get. ![]() And that little group of soccer players is all in red on purpose. One of the ideas of our production designer, Jeffrey Townsend, was to very rarely use red in the moving until the two of them came together. Throughout the first hour-plus of the movie, the color red isn’t used all that much, but that changes when Sam and Annie first cross paths at the Seattle airport, as Ephron revealed in the director’s commentary: Something else that directors (and production designers) really like to play with in movies is color, and it was no different for Nora Ephron and Jeffrey Townsend in Sleepless in Seattle. ![]() The Use Of Red And Lack Of Blue In Sleepless In Seattle Wasn’t By Chance ![]() ![]() ![]() Try a search engine ,or an article such as 10 Greatest Early Mac Games (And How to Play Them) Methods of dealing with this (vMac, Software FPU respectively) are outside the scope of this article. In such cases, I suggest using a separate gaming USB keyboard and/or USB scroll mouse, or even a gamepad where possible. To date, I have no experience of Magic Trackpads for gaming, but the lack of "clickwheel" scrolling may be problematic. Older Apple mice with only one button (plus ctrl-click for right) are not particularly effective for FPS using standard two-button plus scroll wheel controls (e.g., Bioshock), Mighty and/or Magic Mice are too expensive to hammer.
